Robert Hudson from Python Fixings discusses the history and evolution of C2 testing protocols, common areas of ambiguity and misinterpretation and the application of C2 values in accordance with NZS3101:2006 among other topics. This topic is not well understood by many engineers and it is hoped that the presentation will help engineers understand what the values they use in design are actually representing.

They are the "guardians of New Zealand's buildings," inspecting plans, monitoring construction, testing and monitoring property-related matters, and providing expert reports and advice on building issues. This talk will discuss the specific relationship that could exist between building surveyors and engineers.

This presentation outlines some of the engineering principles adopted when designing buildings from more ’natural’ building materials. The structural behaviour of the materials is discussed, the mechanics of their strength and stiffness, and the interplay of strength and stiffness with durability. Example projects will show various issues which need to be addressed during design, and show a variety of successful projects across New Zealand. The New Zealand Earth Building Standards will be discussed, and their interaction with other NZ codes. We will touch on the thermal performance of the materials, and discuss their sustainability credentials and carbon footprint calculation.

Report is a hardfill raft extending beyond the building platform, and in some cases 1m thick. Are there alternatives and how do we compare them on cost? How do they compare using sustainability comparisons? This presentation looks at two alternatives and proposes a working spreadsheet to assist designers’ approximate materials and construction costs, in order to make useful comparisons. The same methods are then used to compare sustainability outcomes.

The webinar discussed some of the key risks and pitfalls related to cantilevered Embedded Pole Retaining Walls of up to about 2m retaining height. Basic design concepts and minimum site investigation requirements will be discussed and some typical construction challenges will be highlighted. Martin Larisch is a Fellow with Engineering New Zealand and works as an Independent Geotechnical Consultant and Independent Expert for defective retaining walls and deep foundations. He has over 25 years of experience in the design and construction of retaining structures, ranging from small residential timber pole retaining walls, to block walls and deep basements, MSE walls and tunnel access shafts. Martin has delivered more than 50 full-day courses covering the design and construction of gravity and embedded retaining walls for Engineering New Zealand over the past few years. This short webinar will only focus on the key aspects of embedded timber pile retaining walls.

Our speaker for this Webinar is Peter Van Grinsven (past president of the EGP group) who will lead a discussion on general aspects of On Site systems as they apply to General Practice Engineers. Peter is Joined on a panel by Andrew Daker and Ian Watson. See Bio’s below. Pete van Grinsven ( CPEng and Fellow) has been designing wastewater treatment and disposal systems for almost 50 years. He has seen the growth of regulation and innovation in the discipline and watched successes and failures and the birth of systematic approaches to design and implementation of on-site wastewater control. He drove the process of getting approval for the proprietary Natural Flow Treatment System where grey and black water are treated separately. This meant finding innovative ways of verifying that the system worked. It gained acceptance from AC as an advanced primary system in 2008. Pete is also a structural engineer with considerable understanding of geotechnical issues around foundation and retaining structures. Andrew Dakers is a semi-retired professional engineer (BE, ME) based in Christchurch. After more than 20 years on the Natural Resources Engineering academic staff at Lincoln University, in 1999 Andrew set his own consulting company (ecoEng Ltd), retiring in 2022. Focusing primarily on engineering design of more than 1000 on-site wastewater systems, with the majority of his projects being in the South Island, but also village sanitation projects in a number of islands in the South Pacific. He was a member of the industry committee to develop on-site wastewater training unit standards for the Water Industry Training of the Agriculture ITO (2006). He has provided in-servicing training courses on on-site wastewater engineering in Australia, New Zealand the Cook Islands and Fiji. From 2009 to 2020, he has been an appointed member of the Management Audit Group for the On-site Effluent Treatment (OSET) National Testing Programme based in Rotorua. He is a member of Water NZ and a committee member of On-site Wastewater Management Systems SIG and is a past Board Member of the International Ecological Engineering Society (IEES). Ian Watson ME CPEng studied under Ian Gunn for his Masters in Public Health completing in 1981. Initially working with large water and wastewater treatment systems with Portals Water Treatment Ltd he subsequently worked on water projects in Papua New Guinea working for Beca. Ian established his own practice in 1982 providing mainly Structural engineering services , but he maintained Public Health involvement with On Site systems, and subdivision infrastructure.
